Airfix

P51D (original series 1 kit

Basic, no wheelwell detail, pilot sat on pegs inside the fuselage

P51B

See through wheel wells, rivets

P51D/K

First kit to supply a reasonable cockpit. Fuselage, if assembled as supplied would end up far too narrow. Needs around 1mm of widening, especially in front of the canopy. Includes Aeroproducts propeller applicable to Mustang MkIV's, but no louvres

P-51D (new kit)

Nice kit, some parts like the undercarriage legs and joystick are extremely fine and require great care when removing from the sprues, there are after market replacements for them.

Eduard

P51D (in many flavours)

Considered to be the ultimate P-51D in this scale. Many variants with the subtle differences between them catered for. As with most Eduard kits divots to indicate where the rivets are.

Revell

P51D

Original Kit, rivets and very basic. Shapes were very suspect, especially tail surfaces

P51B/ Mustang MkIII

New kit, Detailed enclosed wheel wells cockpit detail Why are these kits longer than the other two (Hasegawa and Academy)

Academy

P51A

Superb little kit

P51B/ P51C

nice kit, fairly good cockpit

P51D (original kit)

HMMM 14 cylinder Merlin fitted here if one counts the exhausts. Fair cockpit. Wings were thick and flat (no dihedral) but this is the only kit to have supplied the non-filleted tail surfaces.

P51D (New)

Wings still a bit on the flat and thick side. Good cockpit

Monogram

P51B

No wheel well detail, simple cockpit

Frog

P51A

No wheel well detail, simple cockpit. raised panel lines and slightly thick canopy

Condor

P51/P51A/Mustang Mk1

A-36 Apache

Italeri

P(F)51D

Shareing its wing with the P51A

P51A

Looks good but canopy has no framing on it, at least mine does not

Tamiya

P51D/F51D

Absolutely superb kit. Based on the 48th scale kit but is somewhat simplified in comparison. There are no dropped flaps for instance. Highly recommended. Includes the later Aeroproducts propeller applicable to post war (Korea) F51-D's. Canopy is the only potential problem area in this kit and will require careful assembly.

Heller

P51D

Typical Heller. Cockpit detail raised panel lines. Not up to today’s standards

Matchbox

P51D

Simple basic kit. enclosed wheel wells. Thin undercarriage legs plain wheels There are better kits today

Century

P-61D

Although the boxart is the original Hasegawa kits the plastic is the Matchbox kit.

Smer

P51B

Appears to be based on the Hasegawa kit. Bit rough

P51A Hi-tech

kit with photo-etched details and resin wheels

Hasegawa

P51D (original kit

Enclosed wheel wells and cockpit. Fine raised panel lines. Gave both the Dallas hood and standard canopy.

P51B

Scribed panel lines. fair cockpit boxed in and detailed wheel wells, but too shallow.

P51D

Scribed panel lines. fair cockpit boxed in and detailed wheel wells, but too shallow. Includes Aeroproducts propeller applicable to Mustang MkIV's, but no louvres

The first razor back released, raised panel lines, fair cockpit and very good wheel well detail. The depth of the wheel wells vs modern kits (especially Hasegawa) is visible

Tamiya

P51B/ Mustang MkIII

Great looking kits. Well detailed for out of the box. Easy assembly

F51D/ P51D

Great looking kits which feature easy assembly. Tossup between this and the Hasegawa kit The Tamiya one possibly wins due to the separate flaps although the Hasegawa has finer detail. The design of the clear parts though makes assembly challenging. One needs to be careful and use specialist glues, especially for the windscreen as it does not have any lower frames.

Hasegawa

P51D / F51D (in many flavours)

Great looking kits. Tossup between this and the Tamiya kit I prefer the Hasegawa kit for its finer detail although the Tamiya one wins due to the separate flaps. Be aware that one version of the Hasegawa "special boxing" kits includes markings for the non-filleted tail. But the kit does not include the tail, you have to cut the fillet off and reshape the area, and then there is no mention of some minor panel line changes that needs to be done. The F51D includes white metal late Aeroproducts propeller blades suitable for Korean era aircraft.

Accurate Miniatures

P51/ P51A/ Mustang Mk1/ A-36 Apache/F6A

Accurate Miniatures set a new bar for kit standards when they released these kits. Well detailed easy build looks very good completed.

P51B/P51C

And then they dropped it with this one, sharing the wings with the original P51A release did not cut it. I do understand that this has been rectified and new versions (since the demise of the original AM) have correctly tooled wings.
