Modelling
The following kits have been produced over the years that will allow the modeller to build a model of this aircraft.
Airfix has a 1/144th scale kit of the Boeing 737-200 in their kit range.
Aurora and later released by Monogram had a 1/72nd scale kit in their range. Now long OOP but can be found with much searching (and cash) on the Internet. This kit is basic but with TLC can be built into a beautiful model.
Welsh Models have a 1/72nd scale B737-200 in their range.
Colours
Scheme one
The B737-200 family have been one of the longest serving aircraft within SAA. The first were delivered in 1968 and the last was finally withdrawn in 2005. This longevity ensures that the B737-200’s carried virtually all the colour schemes applicable to the “jet-era” SAA aircraft.
The B737-200ADV’s were delivered in the later all orange tail Flying Springbok scheme with all white fuselages and the simplified cheat lines. The blue one through the windows terminated in a point under the cockpit windows and the orange stripe below this terminated in appoint level with the front of the cockpit windows. Plain SAA/SAL logos above the blue cheat line with SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS/SUID-AFRIKAANSE LUGDIENS below the orange stripe. Aircraft name on nose. SA flag just forward of rear door and registration above cheat line just forward of the tail planes.
Scheme two
After 1997 they were repainted in the current SAA colour scheme of plain white fuselage, new national colours on tail fin and SOUTH AFRICAN titles on both sides of the fuselage. Aircraft type was carried on rear fuselage just forward of rear door and registration preceded the national flag level with the bottom of the rear door. This is the scheme carried until the end of their service life with SAA.
Note the first four aircraft painted in this scheme had slightly different arrangement of the tail colours with a wider blue section. This was eventually changed to match the rest of the fleet.
