BUILDING SAAF MUSTANG's IN SCALE
KITS WITH SAAF DECALS INCLUDED
Hasegawa P51D Korea has a 2 squadron SAAF option included. The colour of the orange of the roundal is a little too red for most tastes. Looking at period colour photos it does appear as if the Orange in the roundal is far redder than expected, but not as red as the supplied decals.

Many years ago there was a Aero magazine in South Africa called. Included in some of the issues (I got 3 or 4) were scale drawings as well as info on SAAF aircraft by a Ian Noakes. I used this article as reference for my first SAAF Mustang. I used the original Hasegawa kit and painted her in standard RAF colours of Dark Green, Ocean Grey and Medium Sea Gray underside. The tail tip was painted white in accordance with 5 squadrons standard practice.
What I should of done was to change the oil breather plate from the standard holed version to the louvre plate as used on P51K's
The national markings were Hasgawa RAF decals with airbrushed orange centers. The code letters and serial number from various Superscale and Modeldecal sheets. I hand painted the pilot’s individual markings.
Hasegawa P51B Mustang MkIII

This model was built straight out the box using the Hasegawa P51B kit. I painted her in the American equivalents of the RAF colours of Dark Green, Ocean Grey and Medium Sea Gray underside. The code letters were sourced from a Microscale sheet of USAF white codes and the serial number came from Modeldecal stock.
The national markings came from the Ken Smy's SAAF markings no 4.
